Hi all.

This thread is meant to welcome newcomers to this forum, and in particular get the discussion stimulated by referring to some outstanding images of galaxies which can be seen under: Gallery>Astrophotoraphy> and then go to the album by Bert van Winsen.

My first comment is that I am envious of the Karoo sky!!

hi groess

i do not see lots of posts on this forum, but here us my 2 cents.
I had a 60 aperture 900mm reflector Konus telescope since 2002 and last week i bought a Orion Skyquest XT10 Intelliscope dob. Since we are on the galaxy thing, that is what i hope to see with it. Believe me, i have surfed the web well to undestand what is visible in the southern Hemisphere and then since dobs are not really equiped for photography, i have to manage a fitting for this to take HD pics with my HD samsung cam.

I have been playing with my scope since the last post. This Orion XT10i dob is pretty much powerfull.
Since the winter is the best season to probe the heavens, in contrast i have not had the oppertunities to go outside with the scope last nights. My girl who is 4, just goes crazy when i lift the plastic from the scope. She just love it. And, for her health, i am forced to setup the scope in the room through the window and do some star gazing through. With this scope you do not even see when you put your hand in front of the scope. It is so powerfull,  taking onto account the window, and the bars on front, i was able to see the whirlpool M51 galaxy and sunflower galaxy between 9 and 10pm = very faint with my 10mm eyepice. It shows some yellowish.

So i have decided to purchase a broadband filter and a barlow2x. This propably will give me some bigger images at least.

I have been surfing the web and most references are for the northern hemi. I have seen some images and messier item on the web once can probe in the southern hemi, but what is real nice to see. What filters are good to enhance galaxies and some nenulas. I hope the broadband filter will do it for me.
